Learning to Spell Better

There are some strategies on learning to spell better. You can:

  • identify root words so that you know how to form new words from them
  • use suffixes to make new words and remember them
  • find out the meanings of prefixes and use them to form new words
  • learn homophones and their meanings
  • break words down into sounds (by syllables)
  • learn plural spelling rules
  • recognise letter patterns in words
  • spot the silent letters in words
  • learn to differentiate between confusing words
Click on Learning to Spell Better for the whole list of strategies. You can print out the factsheets and file them for revision, try out the quizzes and games.

If you do not have the time to go through the entire list, you must at least check out the
Confusing Words.

After trying the activities, do post a comment to share which strategies you find helpful to you (points for grabs!)

I would rather use the "syllables" technique as i think its easier to break the word down into sounds. Like confusion con-fu-sion. It helps me to spell the word.:)

I use syllabus too and sometimes, breaking down words like comfortable . In primary one i had a difficulty learning the word comfortable . so i broke it to com -for - table , like come for table . or you can do it by telling a story ? and also some shortforms , like psychologist . i memorise it by , P.S , sycho , logist .

I would use the "syllables" way too! For me, it makes it easier to pronounce. But i too, sometimes use another way. After breaking it down, i try to form a story. for example, together. i had to learn that when i was primary i too. I first broke it down into syllables, "together" would be "to-get-her". So the story would be, "to get her, we must work together." :)

Thanks Mrs Tay for posting this up again for us to revise it on.
As the same with Kate, Leona and WengLeng, I would also use the "syllable" method. Thats because it is simple and easy to remember. We just break it down the words down to each syllable. It is also easier to pronounce.

Most of the time, I would break them into smaller parts like my first comment or break into different words
......Most of the time I would just write them whole a dozen times or so.....
