It's the P.S.L.E.
Hope you have read through all the Model Compositions in your Writing Folio and revised your work.
Things to remember:
Situational Writing
- PACT (Purpose, Audience, Context, Tone)
- Number the points & identify them in the picture
- Give a greeting
- Keep paragraphs short (1st paragraph - state the purpose)
- Give an ending
- Sign off (write down who it is from)
Composition
- Read the questions and select one wisely (is it similar to something you have written about before?)
- Plan your story (Do not spend more than 5 minutes) - setting, characters, what happened next, ending, write down a few descriptive words/phrases
- Start writing the story (Do develop your story well - about 2-3 sides of the writing paper)
- Check (Did you use the past tense? Did you include feelings, actions? Read the question again and check that you have made use of the points given)
Paper 2
- Note the contextual clues
- Read the comprehension passages carefully and check the tenses for the questions. Check by asking yourself if you have answered the questions directly.
- For sentence synthesis & transformation, check the meaning and the grammatical structure, spelling and punctuation.
All the best to all of you!

The Final Countdown...
Please remember to do the following this weekend...
Homework:
1) Do P.S.L.E. Comprehension Practice 7 & 8
2) Check the answers for Revision Paper 6
3) Learn the words and phrases in your Vocabulary Book
4) Read all the Model Compositions in your Writing Folio
Optional Homework:
1) Online practice (Revision 8-10)
2) Additional Revision Papers
Others:
1) Get the coverpage of the English file signed
2) Get the English P.S.L.E. book signed
3) Bring your Writing Folio to school on Monday
By the way, here are some tips to beat exam stress...
(Adapted from: http://www.collegefashion.net/)
1) Avoid stressful people.
Stress is contagious. During exam week, resist the urge to have a study session with your 'super-tense' friend, especially if she’s complaining about all the work she has to do and breaking pencils all over the place. Her stress will only add to your stress.
2) Eat healthy and exercise.
Skip the sugar and go for healthy snacks like granola bars, cereal or fruits and veggies to keep your blood sugar stable. Furthermore, try to get some form of exercise (Avoid strenuous or long exercise). A simple 10-minute walk will leave you calmer and more focused.
3) Say 'NO' to distractions.
What you need to say 'no' to are the people who want to take up your time. There will probably be a friend who needs to talk to you for hours about her life, or gossip the day before your exams. Resist the urge to say 'yes' to her. You should also avoid other distractions like computer games and too much television.
4) Take short breaks.
For every hour or so that you work, take a 10-minute break. Relax for about 10 mins, then start working again. This gives your brain a little rest and will help keep you more focused when you are actually doing work.
5) If you’ve studied all you can, be confident!
Just before your exams, it’s time to get yourself into confidence mode. You’ve prepared as much as you could, and now it’s time to ace the test.
Spend your time wisely this weekend! :)

Reflections on Term 2 (by Wilbert)
I did well in Term 2. Even though my marks dropped a little in Maths, I met my target for English which is 80 marks and above. My Science score is not too shabby either. During this term, I sat with Alina. She is kind but we rarely talked and I don't really know her that much. For some reason, she called me 'annoying' but I think I was just being sociable. Other than that, we got along just fine.
Holiday Reflections
During the school holidays, I had a lot of fun. I spent most of the time playing and drawing. I also did some revision, especially on Maths as it is my weakest subject. I tried to relax but knowing that the PSLE is just around the corner, I simply can't.
There were many birthday celebrations. I was invited to Mavis' birthday party which was on 11 June but I couldn't go on that day so I gave her a birthday gift on the 10th. My sister had her birthday party on 8 June and my family went to 'Seoul Garden', an eat-all-you-can restaurant, for dinner. My mother had her birthday on 14 June but the party was delayed. We went to 'Taste of Thailand' to celebrate the occasion. On 25 June, we went to Sentosa with my uncle and aunt and their baby. We went to the 'Sentosa Luge and Skyride'. My father, sister, uncle and I tried the 'ride'. The Luge is a sled-like car system. We can easily control the speed by pushing a pair of handlebars back and forth. It was a ride downhill and I enjoyed it very much. But during the ride, my hand felt numb and my grip started to loosen so I went down at a fast speed and almost crashed into someone. Fortunately, I instinctively pulled back the handlebars which act as brakes to stop the Luge. After that, we boarded this 'ski-lift' to take us back to the starting point. My sister kept saying "Why did the ski-lift stop?" suddenly and made me frightened as we were very high. I am grateful to my parents for making my holidays fun.

Holiday Reflections (by Wei Xin)
My family went to Australia on 11 June. I was thrilled. We arrived at Brisbane after a an eight-hour flight. It was really cold there even though it was only the first month of winter. My father rented a car and drove us to the hotel. When we reached the hotel, we saw that there was an outdoor ice rink opposite the hotel. My brother asked my parents if we could go ice skating and they agreed. It was the first time that I did ice skating outdoor. I lost my balance and fell a few times. My clothes were wet and it was freezing cold.
The next day,we went to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. There were a lot of kangaroos and we bought two packets of food to feed them. Some of them were sleeping while some were just lying around or playing with each other. I fed the kangaroos and got their saliva all over my palm... it felt really gross. I also cuddled a koala and took some photos. It felt just like a teddy bear with a coat of thick fur and sharp claws and its grip was really tight.
After spending two days in Brisbane, my father drove us to Gold Coast. We went to Dreamworld and SeaWorld. There were a lot of roller coaster rides. The one that I had the most fun on was the Jet Rescue in SeaWorld. Another exciting activity was the high elements. There was three floors with different challenges. It was windy and my legs were stiff, but I managed to finish all the levels. I also saw kangaroos with its joeys in their pouches. They looked really adorable.
What I love most was AVPX. It is created according to the movie Alien Vs Predator. We went into a big, dark room and put on suits with a gun attached to it. It has lights on our shoulders and the front and back of the suit. Then we were separated into two teams. One of the teams represents the humans infected by aliens while the other team represents the humans. The human team is supposed to shoot the other team and the 'queen alien' and the 'eggs', in order to score points, while the other team is to protect the 'queen alien' and the 'eggs'.
After spending three days in Gold Coast, my father drove us to Sydney which took 14 hours. On the way to Sydney, we encountered a kangaroo which was about 6 feet tall. We also saw a rabbit crossing the road.
Finally, we arrived at Sydney after a long drive. We went on a buffet cruise at Darling Harbour and we met a couple. We talked to them and exchanged emails. Then only we found out that the lady is actually a successful pianist in the US. We met up with my mother's sister and brother. They took us to Blue Mountain, Sydney Fish Market, Sydney Opera House, Watsons Bay, Bondi Beach, and some other places.
I really had a lot of fun in Australia and I am so glad that I could meet up with my uncle and aunt whom I have not seen for years. I love the people as they are very friendly and the amazing views in Australia. I hope that I can go there for a vacation again.

Reflections on Term 2 (by Shawn Pang)
In Term 2, there were lots of exciting activities. One of them I enjoyed was graffiti art. First, the instructor showed us some pictures of graffiti art and I think it was beautiful. She gave us each a paper to draw our own name or nickname. I showed the instructor my drawing and she said that I needed to do a little sketches, some overlapping, and add some pictures and patterns to the words. We also practised drawing graffiti letters. In the fourth lesson, we drew the words of our school values. There were 8 groups so each pair of words is divided by 3 for each group.
Another exciting activity was the sports carnival. I arrived at school early. Desmond, Sherman and I helped Mr Chew to distribute drinks and bread to the classes. We also helped to carry the equipment to Woodlands Stadium, so we left the school earlier. At about 8.30 a.m., the primary 4 to 6 pupils came and they sat on the steps at the stand. The sports carnival started. The pupils were cheering loudly for their classes. I was in the 200-metre race. I started off well and was third in position but, while making the turn, someone overtook me and I was 4th at the end of the race. I was sad that i did not win a medal. I wish that we can have another sports day after the year-end examination.
I also had lots of fun lessons. Besides the art lessons on graffiti art, I enjoyed our computer lab lessons when we did our assignments and sometimes played English games from our class blog. I also had fun in the English remedial lessons. We did practice papers and Mrs Tay said funny things that made us laugh. I enjoyed the lessons in small groups as they helped me improve in SA1. I hope that there will be more fun lessons in Term 3.

Sports Carnival
6A, you 'rawk' (is that the way you spell it?)! To me, you are joint champions with 6B as the score was a tie. I think you were awesome... for you ran and cheered with all your might. There are lots of things we can celebrate... we came in first, second and third in the 4x50m race! Wei Xin, Vanessa and Dzaki did a great job leading the cheers! Our banners were the most 'cool'! And there was a sense of unity in our class!
Well done, 6A... you are MY champions!

3) Making your letter personal
4) Closing politely
5) Adding a post script (P.S.)

What are you reading?
Are you reading during the holidays? Mavis mentioned in an earlier comment that she's reading a 'Percy Jackson' book. Have you read any of the 'Percy Jackson' books? I saw Leona reading 'Animal Farm' by Geroge Orwell last week. I remember enjoying that book when I was a kid too. At present, I'm reading John Grisham's 'The Confession'. It's about a man on death row who is innocent of the crime that he was convicted of. What book are you reading? Tell us about it. You can mention the following:
1) Title
2) Author
3) What is the book about?
4) Do you enjoy it?

Learning to Spell Better
There are some strategies on learning to spell better. You can:
- identify root words so that you know how to form new words from them
- use suffixes to make new words and remember them
- find out the meanings of prefixes and use them to form new words
- learn homophones and their meanings
- break words down into sounds (by syllables)
- learn plural spelling rules
- recognise letter patterns in words
- spot the silent letters in words
- learn to differentiate between confusing words
If you do not have the time to go through the entire list, you must at least check out the
Confusing Words.
After trying the activities, do post a comment to share which strategies you find helpful to you (points for grabs!)

New School Portal
Today, I showed you our new school portal. The first assignment given to you is Abstract Nouns, due next Monday. When I reached home today, I checked the portal and was pleasantly surprised to find that a number of you had already completed the assignment.
'Early Bird' bonus points (+3) to these pupils who have completed and passed all 3 quizzes:
Cheryl, Nigel, Victor and Kate.
Some of you passed the first quiz but did not complete or did not pass the next 2 quizzes. Please persevere.

Homework
1) English Review 1 (Hand in on Monday)
(Time yourself - 1 hour 45 min. If you use the dictionary, you may spend more time on it.)
2) Revise Sentence Synthesis Worksheets 1.1 to 1.7 (Relative Pronouns)
(There will be a quiz on Monday.) Remember to bring your English Worksheet file on Monday.
3) Art - draw a 'Star Colour Wheel'
(Bring your artwork to school on Wednesday. On that day, remember to bring your apron and painting materials.)
4) Study Word List (Forming Nouns) for Spelling on Friday
(Desmond said that he had learnt the first column of words. That's right... you should break up the workload into manageable chunks.)
I hope you still have time to rest well during the weekend.:P

Assembly Talk on Integrity
Finally, to extend a warm welcome to our Thai visitors, everyone sang the YOG song, led by Kate, Weng Leng and Katrina. Don't you think our girls showed confidence when they sang the song? By the way, they had less than one day to prepare for this.

Chinese New Year Celebration
Did you enjoy our Chinese New Year Celebration? Many of you were involved in the conert.
- Zhi Yi was one of the masters of ceremonies, together with Felicia Peh from 5A.
- Dominic and Yuan Kai presented a 'xiang sheng'. Desmond was supposed to be in it but he was sick on that day:(
- Mavis, Alina and Qun Mei were in the Chinese dance.
- In the art competition, the top three prizes went to our pupils - Odelia, Dominic and Catherine! Congratulations!
I think you behaved very well on that day. I'm proud of you. I also think that the 'xiang sheng' was fabulous! Dominic and Yuan Kai were very natural and they made the audience roar with laughter.
